School is out! Here comes summer! It was June 1964 and we had just completed our final examinations. Brother Vincent was waiting for us as we exited the exam hall.
Some of the boys brushed past him, avoiding eye contact. Brother Vincent was an enthusiastic advocate of the schools tough teaching regime.

Writing Better Social Letters is an educational film staring two teenagers, Nora and her older brother Walter, who learn how to write an effective social letter. Nora can't seem to get her thank-you letter right, so Walter becomes her letter writing tutor and helps her through explanation and examples of proper letter writing. He tells her that a letter should sound like her normal speaking voice instead of overly formal and stilted. When Nora wonders why she should even bother, Walter shows her why letter writing is important to keep in touch with friends and family. He shows her examples of all kinds of social letters: thank you cards, invitations, and get well cards. Nora begins to realize the value of keeping in touch with proper letter writing! By the end, Nora has ditched her ripped notebook paper and pencil for proper letter stock and a pen, and is busily writing a thank you letter to her grandparents, using proper letter writing etiquette.

I had fantasised about this moment. Now I could vent my anger and frustration about some of the unhappy days I had spent in his class.
"Well Butler, did you do a Gaisce (great deed)", he asked me, smiling. "I did okay Brother, goodbye and thank you." And I walked away.
Forty years later I wrote the story 'Vocation' and realised that I had handled the farewell in an accepted manner.
I laster drew drew upon this touch in my withdrawal coaching when Thomas (not his real name), aged 57, came to me. He was bored and frustrated in his job, and he wasn't getting on with his new boss. "I will retire if I get a satisfactory package," he said.
I asked him about the firm policy and policy with regard to early withdrawal and discovered that he needed a lot more information about his options. I recommend he have a conference with his boss, at the accepted time, before writing his withdrawal letter. Based upon the chapter I had learnt all those years ago with Brother Vincent, I advised him to merge on the good stuff in his conversation-his accomplishments and his learning.
"Forget the bad stuff, don't burn your bridges," I cautioned.
I recommend he write the following letter:
Dear,
I write to confirm that I am retiring from the Xyz firm on January 31st, after 15 years assistance as yield manager.
I appreciate the opportunities for pro and personal development that were ready to me during that time.
I realize that the circumstances of my withdrawal are somewhat unfavorable, but I also write back that I have more unavoidable memories of my time here than negative ones.
I wish you well in your firm and personal life and maybe we will meet again someday, in business, or socially.
